Who are we?

Born out of tragedy, fuelled by hope. It began with two fathers reaching out in their grief after losing their sons to suicide (Ross and Jordan). Now, it is led by Mike McCarthy (Ross’s dad), who people may know from Sky News.

The Baton of Hope held its first tour in 2023 across numerous locations within the UK. Followed the launch of the Workplace Pledge and other initiatives.

In 2024, we launched the Baton of Hope Derby/Derbyshire, ready for the 2025 tour. Our local committee is supported by people bereaved, affected or passionate about suicide prevention. The tour is locally funded through partnership packages and fundraising.

There are many ways you can get involved, from being a baton-bearer to volunteering, being a partner, and more. Check out the About Us section or contact us.

The Maddy Cusack Foundation take pride in partnering with the @batonofhopederbyshire.

The Baton of Hope is coming to Derby/Derbyshire on 13th September 2025, carried by those bereaved and affected by suicide. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 and is increasingly impacting young people, with over 17 lives lost every day in the UK.

To support this vital cause, the Baton of Hope Committee is leading a sponsored walk around the Edale Skyline, covering a staggering 30km over 10 hours. This challenge will help raise much-needed funds to host the UK’s largest suicide prevention initiative.
